20 Shades of Purple

purple, purple makeup, Loreal, NYX, The Balm, NARS, Too Faced, Essie, Revlon, Hikari, lupus, lupus awareness, makeup

I do love the color purple, though it's not my most favorite in the world. I'm more into lavender, muted mauve, or a deep violet rather than Barney's shade. I saw that Danielle's Beauty Blog has been having color-themed beauty post, and I have wanted to do this particular post (though not after she started doing it, it was just a coincidence).

The color purple has taken on a whole new meaning for me since I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in 2006 and Lupus Nephritis in 2011, with getting my first mini-stroke/seizure in December 2011. Since May is Lupus Awareness Month and purple is the official color of Lupus Foundation of America, I will be posting quite a bit of lupus-related posts to get my fellow bloggers to understand a little bit more about the disease, and to bring together those who are struggling with it and/or other chronic illnesses.

What is lupus, you ask? It is a an chronic disease where the immune system attacks its bad and healthy cells, thus leaving the patients'  immune system weaker than others'. Lupus can attack various organs of the body, like the heart, kidneys (nephritis, which is what I am dealing with), brain (which is what I dealt with when I had seizures), lungs (pulmonary hypertension, which is what my sister Trixie has), and the skin (discoid lupus, which is what Seal the singer has).

I thank God I am in remission right now and that my anti-DNA labs have been negative, meaning the lupus has not been active in my body. Since I've been having my flareups in late 2010, my anti-DNAs have always been positive, and I would always have some sort of higher protein in my kidneys, and labs that would go up and down. Right now, my symptoms and labs have been quiet, and I have been able to taper down on my prednisone dosage. I do get terribly afraid that the symptoms can come back with a flareup worse than ever. And even though I'm so thankful right now for being the healthiest I've ever been since 2010, I will never forget where I came from during those dark times.

So to keep this post lighthearted, I'm rounding up a few of my favorite purple beauty products.

EYES:

loreal, loreal la nude palette 2

1–10. L'Oreal La Nude Palette 2: I actually just picked this up last week as I have been lusting over it for a while. This has various shades of purple, like rich violets, mauves, lavenders, and lilacs. It's almost a dupe of the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, except with more purples than pinks and rose golds. For a drugstore product, the shades are really creamy and pigmented, much moreso than the Maybelline palettes (they are so god-awful). Best of all, they are $20, which is a bit steep for a drugstore product, but the quality can't be beat and you can use the $3.50 off coupon at Ulta to get this.

FACE:

the balm, the balm instain, the balm instain houndstooth, the balm houndstooth, nars, nars blush, nars blush seduction, nars seduction
Top-bottom: The Balm "Houndstooth", NARS "Seduction"

11. The Balm Instain "Houndstooth": Cecilio got this for me for my birthday, since it was on my Balm-themed wishlist. This pinkish-lavender shade is so so pigmented, and though I haven't gotten a chance to wear it, it is really girly and wearable all year round.

12. NARS Blush "Seduction": I got this from the fall/winter 2015 Sephora VIB sale. Another super-pigmented shade (NARS has some of the top-notch blushes out on the market), this is also very flattering on all skin tones. It's best used for fall, so you bet I am counting the months until I can start using it again (or I can use it whenever, but it does match the moody weather better).

LIPS:

Too Faced, Too Faced Melted Metallic Jelly, Nyx Copenhagen, Nyx budapest, nyx spice cake, nyx aria, nyx soft matte lip cream, nyx intense butter gloss, nyx matte lipstick, hikari merlot, hikari lip gloss, revlon lip butter, revlon lollipop
Top–bottom: Too Faced "Melted Metallic Jelly", NYX "Copenhagen", NYX "Budapest", NYX "Spice Cake", NYX "Aria", Hikari "Merlot", Revlon "Lollipop"

13. Too Faced Melted Metallic Jelly: Though it's not an everyday color, I really really adore this jewel-toned shade. It has teeny specks of sparkle, which makes it pop even more. It is a favorite of Dulce Candy's among the Melted Metallic Line.

14. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream "Copenhagen": Another beautiful fall shade (but I actually wore this in my fashion post last month), I have gotten compliments from this deep plum shade from my mom and a stranger outside of Panda Express one time. If you do a google or Instagram search on NYX Copenhagen, you will see every lady from all skin tones rock this shade.

15. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream "Budapest": This is one of my favorites among the new Soft Matte Lip Creams that came out in Spring 2016. For those who are afraid to venture into the brighter punchy or vampy shades of purple, this mauve is one of the safer shades, and very wearable for spring and fall.

16. NYX Intense Butter Gloss "Spice Cake": This is my favorite shade among the original line of the Intense Butter Glosses: the others look very weird on my darker skin tone, and this is one of the few that flatters it. This is a plum with pink-undertones.

17. NYX Matte Lipstick "Aria": Now THIS is a Barney shade. It's a bit out of my comfort zone, but I do enjoy it from time to time, especially when I feel badass.

18. Hikari Lip Gloss "Merlot": I got this in my August ipsy glambag and it is one of my favorites among all of the ipsy products I have received. It is a warmer-toned version of Spice Cake, and it is so so moisturizing and not sticky.

19. Revlon Colourburst Lip Butter "Lollipop": Another safer color, this has a lot more pink undertones and is a beautiful spring shade. Also, it is sheerer than the other shades (and more moisturizing), but you can definitely build it up to having more pigment.

NAILS:

20. Essie "Flowerista": Here is a shade I have been wanting for the longest time: a reddish-violet. I may practice from nail art with this one!

For more information about lupus, please check out Lupus Foundation of America. They have all sorts of information on what lupus is, how it's diagnosed, how to stay healthy, what you can do to support a loved one who has it, how to raise awareness, etc. (I am not affiliated with them, I am just a patient who wants to spread awareness).
